Egg Project

This assignment taught us about the usage of lighting (positions) by choose five or more photos of different light positions. In those five had to include; back lighting, side lighting, and frontal lighting. This taught that lighting plays an important role in taking a photograph, it effects color, shades, (light of course),  shape, form, and details. The first photo is back lighting, then frontal twice, side lighting, overhead light, a mix of frontal and side lighting (or rather frontal lighting to the side), and diagonal overhead lighting.

Letter to a Photographer

To: Mark Gee

The Art of Night

Dear Mark Gee,

Thank you so much for the opportunity for me to contact you directly. (As I said in my email) my name is Juliet Hunt, I’m currently a junior at ConVal High School, and taking a college photography course. I really admire your style of photography, the contrast between the dark landscapes and bright background of stars is breathtaking. I chose to write to you because I am inspired by your work, and astrophotography in general. I’m interested in photographing the night sky/ scenes. I’ve tried countless times to take pictures of the stars and a few beautiful night landscapes, but none of the cameras I use seem to be able to see the scene (despite changing ISO and aperture size). Your photographs are very detailed and beautiful, if you have any advice for how to accomplish night photography I would love to hear any tips you have! I found out you did some work for the movie Avatar, which is awesome, it’s also one of my favorite movies.

I read your About section on your website and have a few questions about your career: What was your journey like being self-taught? What were some steps you took towards starting your career? How did you become recognized for your work? Do you set goals for awards and competitions or do you just enter photos you already took for your own personal/creative purposes? Which project are you most proud of, and which was your favorite to create? Do you normally plan your photos or set out somewhere and photograph what happens/ what you admire about the scene? How do go through the general process of taking your pictures? What were the necessary resources for your venture start-up and operation? What were some of the issues you have faced (financially, labor or community issues, personally)? What do you enjoy most about your photographs, and the process to create them? What strived you to pursue in a career in photography? What type of camera and equipment do you use?

Despite you living in New Zealand my class and I would love if you might be able to visit and talk more about your experience in photography. We’ve had a few photographers as guest speakers at our school, we currently had LaMont Hamilton visit us to talk about his work. It would be an honor for us to meet you and have you teach us more about the realm of photography, but I fully understand if it is too far and difficult to have you visit our class here in New Hampshire. Thank you so much and best wishes!

Sincerely,

Juliet Hunt
